Understanding CB1 and CB2 Receptors
CB1 and CB2 are two of the body’s main cannabinoid receptors. They are part of the endocannabinoid system, a natural communication network that helps the body maintain balance, also known as homeostasis.
CB1 receptors are found mainly in the brain and nervous system, where they help influence functions such as mood, memory, appetite, sleep, movement, and pain signaling.
CB2 receptors are found more commonly in the immune system and throughout tissues such as the spleen, intestines, bones, and pancreas. They are especially involved in immune activity and the body’s inflammatory response.
The graphic shows that these receptors are located throughout the body. Some organs contain mostly CB1 receptors, some contain more CB2 receptors, and others contain both. This widespread distribution helps explain why the endocannabinoid system can influence so many different aspects of health and wellness.
CBD does not work exactly like THC. Rather than strongly activating CB1 receptors, CBD appears to support and influence the endocannabinoid system more indirectly. This is one reason cannabinoid-based wellness is often discussed in connection with balance, regulation, and overall well-being.
